Winter in North Wales

As we reach the shortest day of the year, the long warm sunny days seem a distant memory. However, the changing of the seasons to Winter in North Wales is a chance to experience Oak View at Bryn Morfydd in a different light.

Some would argue that Winter brings the most stunning and dramatic panoramic views of all. And given that our holiday lodges are so snug and cosy, it is also a most beautiful time to escape and enjoy some peace and tranquillity in the run up to Christmas.

Imagine sipping mulled wine whilst staring across the snow-capped Clwydian range or making a hot chocolate and curling up with a good book – having escaped the hustle and bustle of work life. Winter visits to your holiday lodge should be high up on your Christmas list.

Winter Activities in North Wales

Here are some fabulous ideas for activities in the Vale of Clwyd during the winter months:-

Snowy Hills on the Clwydian Range

We are blessed with hundreds of local walks and trails. We love taking long summer evening walks with the dogs, but in total contrast the local walks are stunning during the winter months. The ice-covered fields and dramatic panoramic snowy peaks make a magnificent backdrop for a walk. We often take a circular walk from the park and end up in Ruthin town for a cosy lunch or hot coffee at Cabin Cafe.

Santa Express - Llangollen Railway

A trip on The Llangollen Railway is lovely experience at this time of year. For the young at heart it is a chance to see the magnificent Welsh winter countryside from another perspective. You need to book early, but the kids (and grandkids) just love taking a ride on the Santa Express as it travels from Llangollen to Lapland (Carrog!). What better way to start the festive season.

Mynydd Sleddog husky rides

If you are after more winter excitement, then you must try Mynydd Sleddog husky rides. Experience a husky drawn sleigh ride with a team of racing sled dogs within the beautiful forest trails of Bwlch Hafod Einion near Llyn Brenig and Alwen Reservoir. This is an amazing experience run by wonderful people. “If you love dogs, love outdoor adventure, love Wales, and want a novel experience – then this one is for you”.

Christmas at Hawarden Estate Farm Shop

The Hawarden Farm Estate is just 30 minutes from the park and is a lovely place to visit in winter. Throughout December they host Christmas craft sessions based around nature, the outdoors, and the festive season. You can even finish the session with a story around the campfire in their alpine lodge-inspired outdoor area and the little ones can post a letter to Santa at the end.

Oriel Glasfryn Gallery

If you prefer a low key calmer visit, take a walk around some of the beautiful local art and craft centres. Many of them have coffee and food facilities on site. Ruthin Art and Craft Centre is one of our favourites, and the Oriel Glasfryn Gallery is a wonderful afternoon out too. You will find some of the finest original Welsh art and craft including paintings, jewellery, and ceramics – ideal Christmas present ideas!

Theatr Clwyd Robin Hood Panto - Facebook

Christmas time wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t have an evening at the panto. Theatre Clwyd is just 30 minutes away from Oak View Lodge Park and has some amazing productions. This year it is Robin Hood. So, if you fancy joining in with some of the biggest rock, soul and pop songs, fabulous frocks, dazzling sets, and the anarchic panto puppets – then we are sure you are in for a fun time. “Oh no you’re not – Oh yes you are !!”

Having the Vale of Clwyd on your doorstep at any time of the year is something special, but wintertime and Christmas are particularly magical.
