5 places to take the grandkids when staying in North Wales

Grandparents playing with grandson in the park

North Wales has always been an attractive place for a day out and there are plenty of fun places for grandparents to take the grandchildren. If you are looking at spending quality time with your grandchildren whilst staying at Oak View Lodge Park here are some great suggestions.

1. Loggerheads Park

Wooden bat sculpture at Loggerhead ParksLoggerheads Park is a beautiful woodland valley with a river running through it. It was an important lead mining area and there is still evidence of its industrial past within the woodland. For example, children can learn about the water courses and powerful river and how it was used to grind flour.

You will find lots of designated paths that are easy to follow – so you can choose a long path or a short walk to match those little legs. And there are lots of carved animals dotted throughout the forest to keep the kids on the lookout. On a hot day the grandkids will love splashing in the river or take a pair of wellies when it is not quite so warm. At the end of your exploring there is a lovely cafe to have snacks, with plenty of seating inside and out. Dogs are also welcome.

2. Llangollen Heritage Railway

A ride on a steam train is always special no matter how old you are – and the Llangollen Railway doesn’t disappoint. The Llangollen Railway is the only standard gauge heritage railway in North Wales. It is a 10-mile stretch of railway that starts in the centre of Llangollen town and runs through the Dee Valley along the river Dee, to the lovely town of Corwen.

Check their website for the latest timetables and “experience days”. We highly recommend taking a picnic on the vintage train and enjoying a lovely day out.

3. Take a trip on a horse drawn boat in Llangollen, along the canal

Llangollen Horse Barge Flikr

A trip along the canal in Llangollen is the perfect activity for the grandchildren whatever the weather. The canal boats have seating inside and out and visitors have been enjoying trips from Llangollen Wharf for over 100 years.

Grandparents will love the leisurely ride on the horse drawn boat – whilst the grandkids will be mesmerised by the strength of the gorgeous horses. Enjoy a 45-minute ride on a return trip or grab a seat on the longer 2-hour trip to the Horseshoe Falls which stands at the head of the Llangollen Canal.

4. A trip to the beach

A day out with the grandchildren wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the beach. Prestatyn is a 30-minute drive away from Oak View Lodge Park and you will find three beaches to choose from that stretch nearly 4 miles.

Barkby Beach is great for watching the sailing boats go by, whereas Central Beach is the main beach where most families aim for.

Central Beach is an ideal spot for kids to build sandcastles and fly kites. The Lifeguard station is also situated here, so if you plan to go swimming keep an eye of the beach flags. There is an outdoor shower, cafés and a play area for the kids to enjoy.

Ffrith Beach is at the western end of Prestatyn and stretches from the golf course to Ffrith Beach Fun Parc. You find a sloped access to the beach from the promenade which makes it easy for people to access the beach. Dogs are welcome at this end of the beach all year round.

5. Visit Lake Brenig

Llyn Brenig - Flikr

Lake Brenig or Llyn Brenig is a man-made lake that is located near Conwy about a 25-minute drive from Oak View. There are lots of things to do with the kids here including adventure playground, cycle hire, mountain biking and walking trails.

Take a tour around the lake by bike – hire bike or e-bike – and enjoy the amazing scenery as you follow one of the family cycle trails.

Keep an eye out for the ospreys that are breeding in the area. If you don’t happen to see one, check out the visitor centre that has an Osprey Exhibition. Close to the visitor centre you will find the an on-site adventure playground, which has a zip wire, swings, climbing frames and rockers.

Lyyn Brenig is a popular place to visit, with lots of walks and cycling routes. You can pick up maps from the visitor centre.
